Why Should We Help Sharks?

In this article, scientists tell us about the marine ecologist Enric Sala and his journey to Kingman's Reef. This is a 86,888 square miles habitat that is preserved for all marine life and it is prohibited to go fishing there. President George W. Bush set up this preserve last year around January right before he left office. Thousands of sharks live right in the preserve because Enric believes we should find more safer places for Sharks to live. Many people might find Sharks a negative thing but Scientists tell us the positives. For example, sharks keep most fish from over populating and when you have sharks in a habitat it means that area is healthy. Therefore, Enric Sala is determined to keep them in the ocean. Sharks are being hunted because Shark fins are used in an expensive soup that is popular in many Asian countries. Unfortunately, this means fishermen can make a lot of money selling fins. Scientists also state that about 90 percent of the ocean's top predators have been lost in recent decades because of fishing. As a result, the shark species are in danger of extinction. Overall, this is why marine ecologist, Enric Sala strongly believes that sharks should be helped.
In my opinion, I think that everyone should put an effort towards saving the sharks. For instance, if sharks go extinct then the fish in the Seas will over populate overtime. Then, there will become a competition for food and space for all the animals. Soon, many fish and other marine creatures would die from starvation. In addition, as being a snorkeler myself, I love the beautiful nature of the Sea and all it supports. To keep the oceans safe for all creatures we should create more environments wear all the fauna can live peacfully. In conclusion, this is what I think about assisting all the sharks.

Science, Class Response

Today and yesterday during our science class we have began our new experiment. This experiment involves a variety of activities. First, your group receives an owl pellet and you must dissect it to discover all the hidden bones inside. Throughout this experiment you identify the different bones and find out the animal that the owl had eaten. An interesting fact about this class would be that me and my group found two skulls in our pellet. As a result, we learned we have two animals within the pellet and double the amount of bones. Another interesting fact was that I learned the animals have two separate bottom jaws and you can identify them by the small sharp teeth on the rim. Then I also learned that the process of owls producing the pellets is called regurgitation. This means that after swallowing an animal whole it goes through a series of steps before it can be fully regurgitated. For instance, it enters the glandular stomach where the meat of the animal is separated from the bones and fur. After that, the bones and fur go to the muscular stomach where it squeezes the matter into a ball and the owl throws it back up. However, this experiment may sound a little bit disgusting but I very much enjoyed it. My favorite part was scavenging the pellets for any bones we can find. In addition, I also enjoyed how we had to match the bones with the diagram given us. This felt like we were doing a puzzle which I love to solve. Overall, this activity was very much worth all the time and hard work and I hope to do many more fun activities!

How Can We Help The Coral Reefs?

Within this article, Enric Sala is getting interviewed by national geographic. One fact I learned about Enric Sala was that his favorite sea creature is a shark. Another aspect this interview covered was about his job as a marine ecologist. In addition, I learned what a marine ecologist is. For instance, it is a scientist who studies the many species that live underwater and how they interact with eachother or with humans. Enric was inspired to choose this career because he believes it is fun all the time. "We try to joke and laugh as much as we can, even underwater!" Enric tells national geographic. Also, Enric wanted this job because as a child he used to have daydreams how we can help and save coral reefs! This is important to him because his job requires traveling around the world to these different coral reefs to study the animals. However, humans are throwing more and more garbadge into the seas which is killing the marine animal's habitats so Enric thinks we can prevent this by recycling more. Additionally, we should try to save some energry so we can help the enviorment in general. Lastly, Sala thinks we should encourage people to eat sustainable seafood and hopefully we can start a chain. Overall, I enjoyed this article and I learned numerous things.
In my opinion, I enjoyed this article because it inspired me to make a change. This article made me feel like I had the power to help our planet. As a result, I think I will follow Enric's advice and I will recycle more and save more energry. In addition, since I also snorkel a lot as a hobby I will really try not to hurt the animals living in our oceans. I also liked this article because it inspires me to want to become a marine biologist or ecologist because I love marine animals and helping them. Finally, this article was entertaining and has made a change in my lifestyle.

Literature, Summer Reading

During the summer, I had read the book titled The City Of Ember. Throughout this novel there are two important characters. For example, the character I most enojoyed and identified was Lina. She inspired me to stand up for what I think is right and don't let anyone stop me. However, she also appeared special to me because she had a lot of bravery which is a wonderful qaulity. She showed me this because she found the map and was determined to figure it out, which interested me. Finally, I had a wonderful time reading this book and I am planning on finishing the series.

Literature, Bullying (Man's inhumanity to Man)

In my opinion, I think we don't stop bullying because no one thinks they have enough power. For example, everyone has bullied someone before and sometimes you don't even know how much it might hurt the other person. In addition, during school we all say that we want to do the right thing and stop bullying but in a lot of reasons we dont know how. It is much harder to actually do something then just saying it. I think this relates to the Lord of the Flies because Piggy always gets bullied and harrased by Jack and the other characters. However, Ralph might feel bad and appologize but if he really wanted to help Piggy he would show some courage and stand up to the people and go against the crowd. Overall, I feel that people think that they can make a change but never really try hard enough to do it because of their lack of bravery.
